Why Single Pass Printing Is Changing Food Packaging Paper Bags

Walk into any good bakery, coffee shop, or takeaway joint and you will notice something. The paper bag in your hand is no longer plain. It has a logo, a color, maybe a QR code, sometimes a whole illustration. That shift did not happen by accident. It happened because printing technology finally caught up with what food brands actually need.

The Old Way Was Slow

For decades, printing on paper bags meant flexo or offset. Both work. Both are reliable. But both come with baggage: printing plates, setup time, minimum order quantities that make no sense for a shop that needs two thousand bags, not two hundred thousand.

Change the design? New plates. New setup. New cost. For a food business tweaking its packaging every season, that math never worked.

What Single Pass Actually Does

Single Pass flips the model. The print heads stay still. The paper bag moves underneath. The design goes straight from a digital file to the bag — no plates, no setup, no minimums.

That sounds simple, and it is. But simple is exactly what food packaging has been missing.

A bag can go from file to finished print in minutes. One job finishes, the next begins. A bakery’s kraft bags in the morning, a coffee roaster’s holiday design in the afternoon. Same machine, same day, no downtime worth mentioning.

Paper Bags and Single Pass Get Along Well

Paper is forgiving. Kraft, coated, greaseproof, even coated waterproof stock — Single Pass handles all of it. And because the technology works on ready-made bags, a printer can keep blanks in stock and print whatever the customer needs, whenever they need it.

This is a bigger deal than it sounds. Food retail runs on small, frequent, unpredictable orders. A pizza place opens a second location. A tea brand drops a limited-edition blend. Nobody wants to commit to a warehouse full of bags. Single Pass lets them order what they need and change their mind later.

The Food Safety Question

Printing on food packaging is not like printing a poster. Inks can migrate. Rules are tight. Nobody wants a headline about ink in someone’s sandwich.

Single Pass systems built for food packaging use water-based pigment or UV-curable inks that meet FDA requirements and are migration-tested for food contact. No harsh solvents. No heavy metals. Clean process, safe output.

That means brands can print on the food-contact side of the bag, not just the outside. More design freedom, fewer compromises.

Speed and Money

A Single Pass printer runs at up to 48 meters per minute in standard mode at 1200 x 300 dpi. Switch to high-definition and you get 1200 x 400 dpi at 24 meters per minute. Ultra HD mode drops to 12 meters per minute but delivers 1200 x 600 dpi for fine detail.

Ink cost is knowable before you print. One liter covers roughly 200 square meters at full coverage. The printer’s software lets you plug in a design, set the size, and see the exact ink cost per bag. No guesswork.

And because there are no plates, blankets, or cylinders to replace, maintenance stays low and waste stays minimal. For a packaging producer running shifts around the clock, that adds up fast.

What It Means Going Forward

Single Pass does not just make printing faster. It makes smaller runs, quicker changes, and more customized packaging financially sensible. Food brands get packaging that matches their menu, their season, their marketing calendar. Suppliers get a way to say yes to the orders they used to turn down.
